Body Types

Ectomorphs
- appear fragile and delicate
- they are lean and narrow in the shoulders
- Hyperactive
- can train daily because their bodies recuperate quickly
- often lack muscle tone and strength in the spine and abdominal muscles
- need to increase their muscle tone to correct postural defects
Mesomorphs
- tend to be muscular with large bones and thick joints
- burly in appearance
- mainly male
- need to be active
- overeating causes weight problems
- moderate training allows them to maintain a toned athletic physique.

Endomorphs
- tend to be chubby
- potbellied waist
- lazy thyroid
- slow metabolism
- don’t need to eat a lot
- frequently have knee problems
- need to combine regular training with a strict diet
Body Types:
- a person is most often a mixture of all three body types
- one morphological type cannot be changed into another
- learn to recognize individual type so that you can design an appropriate training program
- appropriate training can help people tone up by limiting the development of fat while firming up the predominant shape and then, secondarily, toning and building muscle.
Fat:
- all healthy people have fat reserves necessary for the proper functioning of their bodies.
- fat accumulations are often distributed the same in both sexes; the main difference is the greater development on certain areas in women
Fat Distribution in Women:
Buttocks
- fat is contained by the gluteal fold which protects the anal area and helps make the sitting position more comfortable
- aging causes the bottom of the buttock to wither
- toning the muscle from the inside will compensate the effects of aging

Low Back
- Fat concentration merges with the gluteal area so that the buttock increases in height

Below the Trochanter (saddlebags)
- located on the superior part of the lateral thigh
- appears pitted or cottage cheese-like

Other Fat Locations:
- Between the Thighs
- Around the Navel
- Pubis
- Knee
- Posterior-medial part of the Upper Arm
- Breasts
Women carry more fat than men:
- between 18% and 20% of the average female’s body weight
- 10% to 15% of the average male’s body weight
Fat Distribution:
Hot climate:
- Buttocks – black Africans
- Hips – Mediterranean
- Navel – Asians
Cold climate:
- evenly distributed for warmth

Cellulite:
- main function is to stockpile energy reserves
- between the deep layer of skin and the muscles
- visible on the surface of the skin of the buttocks and the hips
- difficult to remove and intensive training may not remove it completely
- hormones also play a role in the appearance of cellulite

Different Kinds of Abdomen:
- Normal abdominal wall with toned muscles
- Normal abdominal wall with toned muscles and excess subcutaneous fat giving the impression of ptosis
- Abdominal wall with ptosis because of lack of muscle tone without excess fat
- Abdominal wall with ptosis because of lack of muscle tone accompanied by excess fat
